You want to work in Fashion, now what?

devIf you live and breathe fashion, dreaming about making a career out of your passion is not enough. Once you’ve decided you want to break into the world of fashion, this is the way to go about it!

Just like in any other sector, getting a degree is one of the best things you can do. Gaining knowledge about the field is a step you cannot skip, and in addition to this, many of the best universities specialised in fashion degrees, like Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, also offer the option to send their students on placements with prestigious companies such as Louis Vuitton. Talk about killing two birds with one stone, you’ll not only get a degree and relevant education, but also start working your way up in the industry. If you are already an undergraduate student studying for another degree, you have the option of specialising in fashion at a postgraduate level.

If the academic path does not appeal to you, a valid alternative to achieve working in the fashion world is applying for apprenticeships – and don’t stop at one apprenticeship, work with as many people as you can! Networking is one of the most important things you’ll need to do to make a name for yourself. In fact, if you are also thinking of starting your own business, do consider collaborating with other young people – the more people are involved in the project, the more networking opportunities.

Alongside your studies, there are many things you can do to get started in the fashion world. For example, you can set up a blog or complete an internship over summer or during term holidays. Internships are extremely important tools in helping you realise what exactly you want to do in fashion and whether your expectations match reality. And always, always stay informed about everything fashion-related! For example, know what is happening online and the names of designers and prominent people.

The most important thing, however, is persistency and consistency. To quote Franca Sozzani, director of Vogue Italy, to work in fashion, there aren’t set rules but many variables. You’ll have to want it badly and seize every opportunity, try and fail, “try again, fail again and fail better”. Because good things don’t come to those who wait, they come to those who work!
