There are dozens of pieces about advice, but what about those golden nuggets that aren’t helpful at all? The advice passed down generation to generation that shouldn’t actually be followed at all. Today, we are sharing the wisdom, you should never, ever listen to. Not under any circumstances should you follow these top tips.
Just because there are a lot of articles about a particular topic on the internet, doesn’t mean it is good information. The point of this post is to eliminate ignorance. The below is full of common tips and ways of the world that someone needs to shut down. Five horrible pieces of advice you should never follow.
Do what you love and the money will follow.
If you are a journalist, you know that there is no money in it. Last year, Career Cast voted it “the worst job to have”. Yet, so many budding writers aspire to be the next Rory Gilmore or Andie Anderson. Career decisions can’t only be based on what you love. You need to think logistically. Take into account your financial situation, by all means though, keep making it work. If you have a side-hustle that isn’t paying anything, pick up a job alongside it.
Never go to bed angry.
Arguing when sleep deprived? What a great way to make things worse. End the argument and get your beauty rest. Everyone feels differently in the morning and thinks a lot clearer so you will have a better chance seeing someone else’s side after some z’s.
Have a five-year plan.
Five-year plans are out, pivoting is in. Having tangible goals is amazing, working so hard you realise them is even more incredible. Life happens between planning though, you never know when a job will come your way, a partner will move, or you have to change direction. Have a rough idea as to what you would like to be doing but do not get stuck figuring out the next five years otherwise you will miss all of the fun.
Party the pain away.
Destroying your liver will not fix your issues. Drinking excessively, hopping from bed to bed and staying out all hours may all seem fun now but it is a downward spiral. Stop hurting yourself and work on your issues productively, your problems are all still going to be there the next day, with or without the booze.
You have all the time in the world, be patient.
You really don’t. Your time is now and when you are young you are (almost) free from responsibility. It is more than likely you don’t have children yet so if there is a time to be selfish and go after all of your dream it is now. Rather than wait a decade, until you have the ‘time’, ‘contacts’ and ‘funds’, start today.
