Ladies, the spring semester is in full swing, and we at Scriptoeris have already started to prepare ourselves for the coming of summer. The long warm afternoons spent lounging in the sun, endless days at the beach, and of course road trips with friends! Still summer is a great opportunity to take advantage of time off from school to gain experience within your desired field. Don’t get us wrong we are so looking forward to plenty of relaxation, but the best way to keep on top of your game is applying for internships.
An internship will keep you from completely losing focus while having fun in the sun and gives you a chance to explore your field. Not everyone knows exactly what they want to do and an internship provides students with the opportunity to find what the best fit is for them, and ultimately what is not. It will help put your resume at the forefront with future employers because it’s believed those with said experience can handle more responsibility and won’t require as much training in the field.
Internships give you the ability to apply what you’ve learned in the classroom and see it put into action. It provides the chance to see how much you’ve learned, whether or not you’ve understood what you’ve learned, and how to use it. Overall it’ll build up confidence knowing you’ve developed what you’ve learned in your schooling. It allows you to become familiar with the skills needed for what you want to focus on in the future.
If I’ve convinced you, you may be wondering: How does one go about applying for an internship? It all starts with your area of interest. For example, if you’re an English major and writing is your focus an internship with a magazine is a considerable option. Before you choose, however, make sure you do some research to find the best fit. Some companies even advertise their internship programs on social media like Facebook and Instagram. Need help finding the internship that’s right for you? More often than not you can visit the career development center at your school. They usually have a list of companies that offer internship, and can even help you build and develop your resume.
When applying, get in contact with HR of the company and ask who deals with hiring. Send a note or email explaining your reasons for wanting the job and why you should be hired. Remember you’re not the only one applying so make sure you keep your options open and apply to a few internship opportunities. If you end up getting called in for an interview, dress appropriately and professionally.
If you’re considering applying for a summer internship there is no better time than the present. Don’t wait till the last minute because odds are spots will have been filled up, and you may lose your chance before you prove you’re right for the job. So get out there, fill out those applications and show those companies you’re a force to be reckoned with!
