Travelling when working 9-5

Being a Scriptoeris reader you are bound to love seeing new places and getting in as much travelling as possible. However, I know that you are also determined and ambitious, you’ve have a great job but unfortunately this doesn’t work so well with dreams of travelling everywhere and seeing everything. Having a job doesn’t mean you can’t travel. You most definitely still can. There’s always time to see new places just remember they don’t have to be far, far away.

I don’t have a 9-5. I have a 10am  late sort of job and work at least one day every weekend. I understand it’s hard to travel and when the weekend comes it’s not surprising that I crave my bed. Don’t. Get out there and see something new, make the most of your holidays and weekends and travel. Here are some ways you can still travel even with a 9-5.

Get to know your local surroundings

Whilst travelling to somewhere far away may be exciting, travelling means being open to exploring your local area. I always used to wonder why people wanted to come on holiday near where I lived, it literally has a few shops and a couple of restaurants..absolutely nothing interesting. It wasn’t until researched my town that I realised that it is crammed full of history and fun places. These were right on my doorstep, less than an hour away and I had never even taken this into mind. This sort of travelling is great when you’ve only got one day off. Don’t be tempted to stay in bed and lounge around the house. Get up and go learn more about where you live: be a tourist in your own town!

Make the most of your weekends and holiday allowance

If you work 9-5 this is a little easier as you get a weekend, if not then make the most of your holiday allowance and plan a mini break. Use sites like Skyscanner to see where cheap flights can take you and plan a couple of days away. One weekend is enough time to see a city and get a feel for it. Plus, you’ll feel refreshed and as if you’ve been away from work for more than just two days.

Use your time wisely

So you’ve managed to book the time off, the flights and the hotel. Don’t stay in bed until gone midday. Mornings are usually the best time to investigate, you’ll see all the locals getting up and going to work or to the market. Morning is quite possibly my favourite time of day when I’m away don’t miss out on them! Read up on the town before you leave, as any clued up Scriptoeris reader would, and make sure you’re up early and ready for the day ahead. This tip also extends to those travels in your own town, get the most out of your day and don’t forget about morning!

Seek out other ways to travel

Planes are great, they can get us from one side of the world to the other quicker than pretty much anything else. By all means use them for those long holidays and travels you have planned, but if you’re going somewhere closer to home look into other options. If you’re from the UK give Megabus or the National Express a quick look. You might be able to travel to Paris overnight. A romantic date in Paris- how does that sound? Tickets are cheaper overnight and you don’t have to spend money on a hotel room. You’ll wake up in Paris, or wherever, with full day ahead and lots of time. Eurostar is also great and will get you to Paris or Brussels very quickly. Trains on the continent are much faster than ours tend to be and considering the amount of time getting checked and prepped it could potentially be a lot quicker to travel to the South of France this way. Cannes anyone?

And if you can’t stop dreaming about that 3 month long trip?

I don’t blame you. I can’t stop dreaming about the trip I want to take either. Some jobs will allow you to take extended time off and come back. This is probably more likely if you can show you’re going to learn something, or help a good cause but don’t discard the dream because you think it’s unlikely. Be a Scriptoeris reader and talk to your manager about it. Turn that briefcase into a suitcase and define the decade!
