The public relations industry is a profession that is filled with many talented, driven, and passionate individuals. Not only is it packed with gifted individuals, but it’s also a sector that is mostly run by successful women. Whether you’re currently a public relations student or you have recently graduated from college, it’s never too late to begin your journey toward becoming a PR queen.
PR queens are women who know their way of the land of public relations and are willing to do what it takes to make it to the top. You have to be ambitious and incredibly focused on your goals. Geraldine Estevez, otherwise known as The PR Woman, knows exactly what it takes to become a fabulous PR queen. From her public relations internship at CBS News to her current job as a social media coordinator at an advertising agency in the PR capital; New York City, undeniably her goals have been hit thanks to her yearning to succeed and spirit. I was lucky enough to talk with Estevez; the PR Queen and her first-hand advice for me to exclusively share with you Scriptoeris goddesses is about believing in yourself and no matter what – going after your dreams. Self-motivation is crucial in the public relations field or any other field for that matter, Estevez told me. After graduation, you have no professors to push you and motivate you to aim higher. You should strive to set your own goals and fearlessly accomplish them. Not only do you have to have the motivation to accomplish your aims, but also you have to depend on yourself to make opportunities happen. If you really want to be a PR queen, you cannot simply rely on others to find opportunities for you. You have to be more than willing to open some doors for yourself.
In order to do this, networking is one of the best ways you can really climb to the top of your PR career. (Check out another article on Scriptoeris Clueless about networking). Estevez continued; “The most important thing I’ve learned in my PR career is that networking is essential”! Whenever I attend an event, I set a goal: I cannot leave without handing out business cards, not too long ago; I attended an event and had to leave early. I made it a point to hand out some business cards instead of none. I remain humble and treat everyone equally despite his or her professional position. It’s often the ones we least expect that lead us to the greatest opportunities.
As Estevez said, you never know when an opportunity can happen, and aspiring PR queens understand this completely. Your career can change paths in a blink of an eye, but you have to be willing to embrace the change with open arms. When you have an open mind in the public relations field, it allows you to truly discover the career right path for you. However, when Scriptoeris asked Estevez what her secret was to becoming a PR queen, she noted that there actually aren’t any secrets. It’s all about having the persistence and always striving to be your very best. If you want a career in PR, work hard and never ever give up. Network everywhere and anywhere, even at your local coffee shop.
In addition to never settling in your career, it’s important for you to always be learning.Be a sponge, absorb everything around you, and don’t be afraid to delve into the things that aren’t directly related to your career. Remember, opportunities surround you every day; you just have to be willing to put yourself out there and put in the extra effort to go above and beyond in your career.PR queens are always defining the decade. Not only do they have the passion and drive, but they also have the grace and kindness of heart that makes them truly a queen in public relations. PR queens are women who are always willing to help others and truly stand for what is right for their clients, agency, and colleagues. Not only that, but their enthusiasm is contagious, which makes the world of public relations a rewarding and exciting career path to follow. Be humble and appreciative, don’t forget to show how enthusiastic you are about what you do! And with that, I left our meeting business cards in hand off to my local coffee shop.
