The abandoned Europe

With a long history and rich culture, Europe is full of exciting places to explore. Why not escape the crowds and visit some of Europe’s incredible abandoned places?

1) The Maunsell Forts, UK

The Maunsell Forts were small fortified towers built in the Thames and Mersey estuaries during the Second World War. Decommissioned in the 1950s they’re now available to rent for holidays. Perhaps the coolest accommodation ever?

2) Pompeii, Italy

Whilst you won’t exactly escape the crowds at this abandoned place, you will be overwhelmed by the sad story and incredible nature of the town’s history. Pompeii was abandoned when Mount Vesuvius erupted and wiped out the population. It certainly makes for an interesting day of exploration and learning.

3) Tunnel of Love, Ukraine

Walk hand in hand with a loved one, or in a fit of giggles with your bestie as you explore the tunnel of Love near Klevan in the Ukraine. The tunnel is an old railway line now covered in green foliage, it sure beats the disused lines you walk across in England.

4) Craco, Italy

Craco is a ghost town in the Southern Italian region of Basilicata. The town was abandoned in 1963 as a result of recurring landslides. It makes for an interesting viewing – just don’t get too spooked!

5) Varosha, Cyprus

Abandoned during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, he town has remained uninhabited ever since. Previously anyone trying to visit Varosha risked death but now there are plans to turn Varosha into an eco-city.
