7 simple ways to relax when you are stressed

Stressed? Anxious? When struggling to sleep or when I am feeling particularly anxious, I start hunting for ways to de-stress quickly. It certainly doesn’t take at lot to totally freak out over something. The good news is, there are many ways to reduce stress— so, take solace in the fact that that you are not alone and read our handy guide.

1. Laugh

I am not talking about a giggle but a resounding belly laugh. Laughing reduces stress hormones such as epinephrine and cortisol, among many others. Even if something isn’t funny, just laugh to yourself and you will be a lot calmer in seconds.

2. Stop stress eating

Stress eating is only a temporary fix. The high you can get from salty and sugary treats  only lasts for a short while. Keep your diet balanced and prepare meals in advance. Never under or over eat either, feeling hungry can intensify your low mood, making you feel worse.

3.  Drink a herbal tea

Now, more people are turning to safer and more natural solutions to de-stress. Peppermint tea is the most effective because it will help you achieve an overall calm. Chamomile tea in fact not only reduces stress and anxiety, but treats insomnia. Just like peppermint tea, chamomile tea has great benefits in relaxing the muscles and reducing irritability.

4. Book a holiday

Taking annual vacations is really good for you. Holidays are not only an indulgence but necessary for good health. It doesn’t mean that you have to spend a fortune, you can choose a long weekend that is close to home.

5. Purchase a Gratitude Journal

Gratitude is a powerful force that you can use to expand your happiness, improve your health, and—you guessed it—helps you cope with stress. People who consciously focus on gratitude, experience greater emotional wellbeing and physical health than those who do not. Gratitude Journal: 100 Days of Gratitude Will Change your Life is our top favourite.

6. Sleep

Sleep disturbances are especially common among those with mental health disorders. Getting into the habit of doing the same few things every night before you go to bed helps clue your body into what is happening. One of the best ways to relax before going to bed, is to take a nice hot shower or bath before you go to bed.

7. Stretch

Sometimes we forget that any stretching is better than none, and we don’t take the time to do it unless we are getting ready for a work-out. In just a few minutes, you can easily determine which area of your body seems tightest and stretch it out.
