Courtney Benisch, our go to PR queen at Smart Girl Tribe has taught me everything I know about public relations. I recommend reading some of her articles, such as Land a job in PR, 10 PR quotes, and PR for a new Business. I always try to remember something she said from her article PR pros and cons:
“As a young professional in this fast paced world, it can be easy to get caught up in the downsides. You just have to remember the upsides outweigh them all. Being able to deal with these challenges, and taking the time to appreciate the good things about public relations jobs, is important to workplace”
Working in PR can be challenging, but what in life is not challenging that is worth fighting for? Having specific personality traits can help with being successful in this field. Here are five signs you should work in PR:
Public relations is always changing and competitive. Those in public relations need to be creative because it helps with approaching work tasks differently. Creative people can accomplish more because they may take a different approach or look for various ways to accomplish their work. Additionally, creative people help with working on a team because it is always better to have more ideas to work with.
It is important to be a good communicator, which means much more than public speaking in this digital age. A good communicator in the virtual world we have been thrust upon is someone efficient at email, texting, and phone calls. I stress this because I for one am horrible with emails. I am the type of person who reads it, then tells myself I will answer it later, and never do. Additionally, it is important to be able to deal with people and communicate with individuals from all different positions and backgrounds. Therefore, a good communicator is someone well rounded. Finally, a good communicator is also a good listener. Good listeners make the best communicators, which is important in PR for dealing with clients.
For a person interested in the public relations field, one will do better who keeps informed. It is important to know what is going on in the world around us.
Jobs change every day, so the public relations girl needs to be able to change along with it. The working world is extremely fast-paced. Therefore, if you are easily adaptable to your surroundings you will have success in a public relations field. Working with others means changes can happen on the fly. Additionally, in the business world, women will work with multiple different forms of clientele, which may require a certain finesse that a woman with an adaptable personality can handle better.
Always changing, growing, and expanding. Going beyond fluidity, it is important to always be forever going through a metamorphosis. The public relations girl should never stay the same for too long. As trends change, so does the public relations field and people working in it.
Public relations is not for everyone exactly for this reason. However, those few people who possess these above traits may help to continue to transform the working world and PR field.
