How to really self-care, it’s not all baths and candy

Self-care is often a very unbeautiful thing. Forget the Danish trends you have been reading about or the scented salts you swear by. True self-care is completely necessary but very often, ignored. We need to always be thinking about our mental and physical health to keep us happy and healthy, not only for our self-esteem but overall wellbeing. A few small behaviours can provide balance in an increasingly demanding world.

The truth is though, self-care has been associated with bubble baths, flowers and chocolates. Self-care should be about building a healthy and stable life. It is a concept that this year has become so trendy we think an Instagram post can make us feel more at ease. How many times have we been promised that organic candles will make us more relaxed? How many people have shared their gluten-free, dairy-free, wheat-free, sugar-free diet with you? In a world where self-care can be bought and sold, we are turning around and saying no thank you, this is how to really take care of yourself.

Let go

If you are a culprit of frequently indulging in consumer self-care then you are not allowing yourself to truly make choices for your long-term happiness. Rather than conjuring up new ways to fix yourself or change your flaws, start loving yourself. Start looking in the mirror and being proud of your body, as opposed to hating it.

Be the hero of your life

Be the hero of your life, not the victim. Stop blaming others for your mistakes and mishaps. Tony Robbins, life coach says: “If you are going to blame someone for all the bad, you have to blame them for all the good too. Blame elegantly, blame intelligently, blame effectively.” Problems make us grow and they sculpt our soul. Having a life without problems is virtually impossible, it is how you rise from those problems that you will find your truth.

Live for you

Always doing what is expected of you is a sure road to a regretful existence. Everybody exists, but do you live? More often than not, expectations can get in the way of an awesome life experience. Whether going after a particular job, pursuing a degree or travelling the world, everyone lives according to their own handbooks. So even if you have to go it alone, live for you and for nobody else.
