New Year’s Eve . For some it’s an anticlimax once the bells have stuck a dozen times. For others its full of promises of new beginnings and exciting developments. Whatever your views on the night it’s hard to not succumb to the celebrations with their impressive fireworks and good will from everyone around. So where’s best to enjoy these celebrations?
Sydney
One of the first cities in the world to see in the new year, Sydney Harbour celebrations do not disappoint. The world watches as the city landmarks of Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House say “G’day” to the New Year. Pack a picnic and head to the harbour with a group of friends early in the afternoon. Pre-show entertainment starts at 5pm with fireworks at 9pm building up the atmosphere until midnight. If you’re looking for that extra special New Year’s Eve, then why not book a Showboat? On Sydney’s Showboats you will have an unrivalled view of the lights in the harbour!
Paris
Renowned as the City of Love, the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris becomes the centre of Paris’ New Year’s Eve celebrations when the sparkling lights dance at the stroke of ‘minuit’. In France the New Year is known as “St. Sylvestre” and starts January 1st for a month. Instead of a simple “Salut”, the French wish each other “Bonnee Année” followed by exchanging “bisoux” (kisses) on each cheek. This greeting lasts the entire month and can be heard throughout France. Whilst standing near the Eiffel Tower offers some spectacular views, the real party is held along the Champs Elysée. For a more relaxed atmosphere head up to Montmatre where you can view the city lights – the perfect place to bid farewell to the year just passed.
London
London sees in the New Year with a bang! For fireworks head to Southbank and claim your spot on one of the bridges early to watch as Big Ben lights up and the fireworks spark off the London Eye. If you don’t fancy being packed in like sardines along the Thames then head to Primrose Hill to join other revellers and bag yourself a vantage point from which to see the display. If you’re lucky enough to bag some tickets to Somerset House you’ll be in for a treat. Skate on the outdoor rink to live bands and DJs. Tickets include champagne at midnight and and exclusive view of the fireworks on the Thames from the River Terrace. Staying in London over night? Why not watch the New Year’s Day Parade and continue to welcome the New Year.
Edinburgh
Don’t forget about Scotland when it comes to New Year’s Eve! New Year’s Eve in Edinburgh is better known as Hogmanay which combines the festive fun of Christmas with the celebrations synonymous with 31st December. Join in the Street Party and be part of one of the biggest New Year’s Eve celebrations around!
New York
New York, New York. Perhaps one of the most filmed cities in the world, New York promises plenty of celebrations on Manhattan Island. Head to Times Square to see the globally recognised tradition of the Ball Drop. When the clock strikes twelve, the famous New Year’s Eve Ball descends from a flagpole atop One Times Square. Combine this with musical performances, balloons, pom-poms, confetti and a colourful pyrotechnic display and you’ve got yourself a real party! Just get there early and be prepared for the long haul – it’ll be worth it!
