How Negative News impacts your Mental Health

Between Trump, wars and inequality it is easy to get sucked into the news. Once upon a time, telephones were only used to make phone calls and televisions only had 5 channels. Not now. Nowadays, each social media platform has become a news media outlet too.

Negative news focuses on wars, terror attacks, serious health issues, and more. Untruthful news, or fake news, is about twisting stories to target a person, brand, country, etc. in a negative light.

Keeping up with current events is imperative but how can we stop letting the noise from impacting our overall wellbeing?

Understand its impact

British psychologist Dr. Graham Davey suggests that violent media exposure can indeed contribute to the development of stress, anxiety, depression and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Be a goal-digger

Follow accounts on social media that fit with your goals and aspirations. The Skimm is a great way to get current events quickly and effectively. They send snippets of headlines to your email and even have an app to check! If you are more career oriented, BumbleBizz and Chelsea Krost are positive influences on Twitter and Instagram. For fashion and lifestyle, there are thousands of accounts that are body positive and inspiring: Missguided and Olivia Muenter are two of my favourites.

Embrace Positivity

Following positive accounts that publish inspiring and truthful posts will inspire you. If you see a news story that unsettles you, you can always research the topic to make sure you get all the information to settle your nerves. If it becomes too much, take a step back and think “is this really going to impact me right this second?”

Don’t give fake news a life.

Fake and negative news does not only consist of violent images or behaviour. Negative news could also include negative comments. Avoid social media trolls. Most of them are full of anger and misinformation with plenty of time on their hands. Make use of your blocking feature.

Seek professional support

If you are unable to manage your thoughts or find that the news is severely interfering with your ability to enjoy life, consider therapy. Mind is the UK’s leading mental health charity, to make sure nobody feels alone.
