Forging a successful career is significantly harder for us women, there are many more hurdles and much more against us; but, that doesn’t mean we can’t do it. In fact, if anything, it gives us the chance to prove just how strong we really are. So, what can you be doing in your twenties to ensure you are building a successful career. From networking to testing yourself, here are a few tips to help get you there.
Speak
Don’t be afraid to use your voice. Staying quiet doesn’t get anyone noticed so be sure to share your ideas and thoughts with those around you. People will remember you and come back to you in the future for your opinion. All companies appreciate suggestions as well, if you have an idea that will make their administration system less exhausting and a lot lighter then share it. Share it with the boss though so they can start taking notice of you.
Brag
Obviously don’t run around the office reminding everyone about all your achievements but don’t be afraid to mention past accomplishments. After all, how else will anyone know you are worthy of that promotion. You need to be proud of your past and share it with as many people as possible, that is just great networking.
Don’t gossip
Leave the playground dramas behind and keep your nose out of other people’s business. Nobody likes a busy-body and gossiping suggests that you aren’t mature enough for a higher position.
Accept the invitations
Business deals are made at the bar. Your colleagues need to get to know you outside of the office. You need to be seen having a laugh and relaxing, it will result in lasting relationships at work but also a higher reputation. (No drunk antics of course). Sure, an evening of making small talk might not sound like the most fun in the world but networking is a great way to meet new people, share ideas and open you up to new opportunities. Who knows, it could just be the key to your dream job.
Embrace failure
Eloise Ristad said: “When we give ourselves permission to fail, we, at the same time, give ourselves permission to excel.” Test yourself and, if you fail, get up, brush yourself off and give it another go. You don’t learn from getting it right every time and you certainly don’t learn from never taking a chance. Don’t fear failure, the fear alone will stop you from living the life you are destined for.
Believe
You won’t get anywhere if you don’t think you can do it. It’s one thing to dream up great ideas, it’s another thing to realise them. You can’t expect someone to believe you can do something if you aren’t sure yourself. Fake it until you make it if you have to, you’re not going to be able to sell a product if you don’t believe in it, it isn’t any different when it comes to yourself.
