To change careers you have to obviously move on from your current role. You might be considering a new direction, a new challenge that utilises your skills or even progression from your role. Here is how to maximise the opportunities out there and all of the tips you need to make the transition that little bit easier.
1. Identify the problem
To change careers, evaluate your current position and ask yourself why you want to switch careers. Identify the source of your dissatisfaction by writing down everything you dislike about your current job. It could be the role itself. If you are not ready to radically reinvent your career instantly, work towards a new career overtime by taking night courses, talking to your boss about a promotion or even by researching other fields in the meantime.
2. Research the career you want
Analyse your situation and work out what you would like to do as soon as you feel you would like to change careers. Then, explore what it takes to enter your desired field. 3. Network with experts in the field
Talk to your friends and family about their connections. LinkedIn is a great resource, attend industry conferences, networking events and meet ups. Entering a room full of strangers can be a difficult experience so be prepared and have a strategy to help you focus. Use the industry experts and pick their brains, write them a thank you note afterwards and express how grateful you are for their help though.
4. Address the skills you lack
Consult a certified career counsellor to see which skills are transferable to your new career. In order to fill gaps, ask to take on additional responsibilities at your job or consider volunteering.
5. Reshape your CV
A job posting in your desired field will list the skills and responsibilities required; use them to tailor your resume. Include only those achievements and strengths that relate to the new career. When sending it off, consider attaching a recommendation from one of your influential connections. Their words could hold weight and put you in a better position.
