It’s fast approaching the new year and it’s about time that we put a full stop once and for all to the illusion that to be a powerful woman is a synonym for being a b*tch and, instead, we start being the boss. To do this think body language. Body language is key to being successful, a head held high is a great start, but what other ways can help you implement your power?
Let’s begin with when you first meet someone. You’re nervous, a lot could be riding on this and so it is important to get this first impression right. You need to let them know you mean business. A firm handshake sends across a clear message that you are in control and confident, meaning the other person will be confident in your ability right from the start. This must be accompanied with looking them directly in the eye as this also conveys self confidence, just be aware not to freak them out!
To continue with this air of self-assurance remember to keep your head held high and shoulders back during conversation. This not only signals a more assertive attitude but physically makes you appear taller, and with women being statistically shorter than men it is a proven method in putting oneself on a more equal footing. Slumped shoulders suggest vulnerability and passiveness so make sure you avoid it.
Try not to fidget. Actions such as twirling your hair or touching your face can make you seem shy and as though you don’t believe you should be there. Try open hand gestures to keep your arms moving yet hiding your nervousness and to avoid the assumption that you’re a pushover. Open hand gestures will also make you seem more amicable. It is important to appear enthusiastic and friendly, whilst you are trying to assert your power you don’t want to seem unapproachable. Remember that smiling while greeting others will help gain their trust. A boss girl attitude is all about being well rounded- not just to attain dominance.
One final quick and easy way to assert your authority is to add a dash of red. Be that lipstick, a neck scarf or nail colour, red commands a sense of power and will reinforce your ‘I’m the boss’ body language. Just make sure you don’t overdo it and keep it subtle.
Now that you know how to demonstrate your leadership ensure that you remember that this approach is not just for the boardroom, you are the boss of your life and this approach will help remind others of that too. Don’t be ashamed to hold that head high and strut your fabulous and powerful attitude. Women deserve it.
Love this! Never thought about the splash of red before but it’s certainly going to become a staple from now on!
We love the colour red too! It’s such a powerful colour! #smartissexy
