5 ways to boost your serotonin levels

Serotonin is a fantastic thing. It is known as the happy chemical in our bodies and can play major role in regulating your mood.

So let’s keep those levels up. There are lots of reasons our serotonin levels can drop. When that happens, we can feel anxious, worried, sad or even depressed.  Low levels of serotonin can affect everything. It can influence all aspects of your life. Whether you’ve broken up with your partner, are super stressed at work or just feeling down in the dumps it’s important to remember this easy fix to help you feel better. Here are some natural and simple ways that you can keep your serotonin up.

Exercise

My therapist recently told me that when people stop doing exercise it can be a major contributor to depression because their bodies are not producing as much serotonin. Like Elle Woods from Legally Blonde says: “Exercise gives you endorphins; endorphins make you happy.” Indeed, when you exercise your body realises a variety of chemicals, one of these is serotonin. Serotonin helps with the recovery of muscles and gets you hooked on the movement that you’re doing. And guess what – it doesn’t take a lot of exercise to encourage this serotonin boost. So the best way to up your levels of serotonin is to choose a workout you love. If boxing helps you de stress and makes you feel happy then box away my friend or if Zumba make some you feel great then go forth and boogie the night away.

Relax

Take the time to relax. That could be going and having a spa day. But apparently if you have anxiety or depression by having a massage you can reduce your cortisol (the stress hormone) levels in half and made serotonin levels increase. Get yourself to the spa and take a break. You deserve it.

Vitamin boost

Our body obviously needs lots of vitamins for us to stay healthy. Every vitamin in the B family helps you to feel happy so if you feel your serotonin might need a vitamin boost buy some B vitamins. Another vitamin that can help us to have better serotonin levels is D. Just by going outside and having a walk in the sunlight you can help to kick-start your serotonin levels. This works just the same on a cloudy day so there is no excuse not to go outside even when it’s winter.

Prioritise self care

We need to make a more conscious effort to take better care of ourselves. Sit for a few minutes and give yourself time to relax. You also need to think about your mindset and encourage positive thinking. Do something that makes you happy every day, that could be going for a coffee with a friend, reading or going for a run. You need to find the things that make you happy and feel positive and have them in your daily routine.

Meditate

If you haven’t joined the meditation hype yet, what are you waiting for? Take the time to read up on the benefits of meditation you need to. Research has shown that by meditating you can help to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and boost those amazing serotonin levels. According to a recent study, 30 minutes of meditation can improve symptoms of depression, but if you’re not ready for 30 minutes just try 10 or 15 minutes. What have you got to lose?

Remember to keep yourself happy and healthy, after all, it is easier than you think.
